Black Seed Oil in Scientific Research

Black seed oil (Nigella sativa L.) has been investigated in human clinical studies. The recommended daily dose of the product is one to two softgel capsules, providing a total of 500–1,000 mg of cold-pressed black seed oil. A daily dose of 1,000 mg has been used in several published studies.

1. Research on cardiometabolic markers

In two eight-week clinical studies, the first involving 43 and the second 50 individuals with type 2 diabetes, researchers evaluated the intake of 1,000 mg of black seed oil daily.

In the first study, compared with placebo, statistically significant reductions were recorded in fasting blood glucose, glycated haemoglobin, total and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, body mass index, waist circumference and blood pressure. No significant differences were observed in HDL cholesterol or the HOMA-IR insulin resistance index.

In the second study, researchers reported significant reductions in fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, as well as in the hs-CRP and MDA markers. At the same time, an increase in HDL cholesterol was recorded.

2. Research on vascular function

In a separate two-month clinical trial involving 50 individuals with cardiovascular risk factors, the intake of two 500 mg capsules daily was investigated. Compared with placebo, researchers recorded an increase in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and plasma nitrite and nitrate levels (NOx). However, no significant differences were found in the ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 markers.

3. Research on inflammatory and oxidative markers

In an eight-week clinical study involving 42 women with rheumatoid arthritis, 1,000 mg of black seed oil was used daily. Researchers recorded an increase in IL-10, while MDA and nitric oxide levels decreased compared with baseline values. No significant changes were observed in TNF-α, SOD, catalase or total antioxidant capacity.

4. Research on respiratory parameters

An initial total of 80 individuals with asthma participated in a four-week clinical trial, 60 of whom completed the study. The intake of 500 mg of black seed oil twice daily, as an adjunct to their usual treatment, was associated with a better Asthma Control Test score and a reduction in blood eosinophils compared with placebo. However, the change in FEV1 was not statistically significant.

Packaging: 60 softgel capsules, sufficient for 1 to 2 months

Recommended daily dose: Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, either in the morning or one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a little water.
