The appearance of fingernails and toenails reflects, among other things, the overall health of our body. Many systemic diseases also manifest through changes in the nails. Alterations in color, strength, thickness, and general quality or appearance of the nails may indicate a dermatological or other health condition and should not be ignored.

A very common problem affecting both men and women is fungal infection of the toenails, and less frequently the fingernails. Onychomycosis accounts for about 30% of all fungal infections on the skin surface.

Nail fungus is a common, treatable condition that occurs when your nails become infected with fungi. The fungus thrives by feeding on the nails and the outer layer of skin, causing damage to the nails and the tissue underneath. Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper into the nail, making it increasingly difficult to treat.

The fungus from an infected nail can also spread to socks and shoes, potentially infecting other nails and skin. Anyone can get a nail fungus infection, though it is more common in athletes and people with diabetes or circulatory disorders such as angiopathy. Onychomycosis is rare in children.

What are the types of onychomycosis?
Although nails can reflect various systemic diseases, most nail deformities or discolorations are caused by onychomycosis rather than other conditions. Clinically, there are four types of fungal nail infections:

  • Distal subungual onychomycosis: Begins at the free edge of the nail and spreads toward the nail bed.

  • White superficial onychomycosis: The nail plate becomes white and opaque.

  • Proximal subungual onychomycosis: Starts near the cuticle area.

  • Candidal onychomycosis: Caused by Candida albicans, affecting the proximal and lateral nail folds, often accompanied by inflammation, pain, and swelling around the nail. Without treatment, the entire nail can become infected.

Tea Tree Oil: How effective is it for toenail fungus?

The antiseptic properties of tea tree essential oil can combat nail fungal infections, often producing remarkable results.

You can apply 2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil onto a cotton ball and gently rub it onto the affected nail area. Use the cotton ball to massage the infected nails for about 10 minutes.

For quicker results, we recommend purchasing pure essential oil. Otherwise, it may take up to 12 months for the fungus to fully clear. At Votanotherapeia, we sell certified, 100% pure natural essential oils without any additives!
