Lavender (family Lamiaceae) is a semi-shrub, about 60 cm tall, with highly branched, gray-green branches. The leaves are elongated and curl inward at the edges. The violet flowers grow radially and appear in the middle of summer. It is collected early in the morning.

The name comes from the Latin "lavare" (to wash) and refers to the use of the fragrant plant as an addition to baths.

Due to its relaxing and calming effects, the flowers of lavender are particularly suitable for nervous disorders and sleep disturbances.

This use is also recommended by the European Commission. Lavender essential oil, when added to a bath before sleep, acts as a sedative.

Used parts and components

In medicine, the dried flowers are used. Pharmacologically significant components include hydroxycoumarin, tannins, derivatives of caffeic acid, and the essential oil containing linalool and linalyl acetate.

Use in alternative medicine

Internally, lavender (as an infusion) is used for migraines, cramps, and bronchial asthma.

Externally, its infusion or oil is used for rheumatism, exhaustion, wounds that heal slowly, as well as burns, and as a sedative (e.g., in aromatic pillows with dried flowers).

Scientifically documented applications

The European Commission supports the use of lavender flowers for anxiety, sleep disorders, and nervous gastrointestinal complaints. In animal experiments, lavender reduced mobility, decreased the phase of wakefulness, and increased total sleep duration.

Side effects

In rare cases, essential oil may cause allergic reactions.
